Children Making Sense of Writing

What is the experience of writing for most of the children in Indian schools? Are they given enough opportunities to meaningfully engage with writing or are they made to merely copying written words from textbook, board or from each other? In this blog, Jane Sahi briefly critiques the way children are forced to copy without understanding. She suggests some ways in which teachers can facilitate meaningful writing for young children by paying attention to their Emergent Writing, thereby also enabling children to make sense of writing and using it to communicate and comprehend better.
